KangerTech has been around since I got into the vaping scene years ago. In fact, my very first vape purchase was one of the original KangerTech SubVod stick devices. I’m not going to say that I was a huge fan of Kanger after I finally moved on and upgraded. Although KangerTech has put out some fairly decent devices in the past, recently, they haven’t done much to keep up with the great technology that other manufacturers are releasing. That being said, the KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit is better than some of their recent releases. Let’s take a look at 4 of the pros and 4 cons of the KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit.
Pro: The KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit has a Full Temperature Control Suite
The TC suite on the Xlum actually works pretty well. It isn’t the best TC suite I’ve vaped with, but it does the job. You can easily click the fire button three times to navigate into TC, then click three more times to change the type of TC (either Ni, Ti, or SS). The mod is capable of reaching 200-600 degrees fahrenheit or 100-315 degrees celsius. Good flavor, good vapor, and not much to complain about using the TC modes.
Con: The Xlum Tank is Very Noisy
While the Xlum tank isn’t a bad sub-ohm, it’s hard to separate yourself from the noise this thing puts out. You can adjust the bottom airflow slots to fix it, but even then the tank produces more noise than most of the sub-ohm tanks I’ve tried. If you’re into stealth vaping from time to time, with the Xlum tank, forget it.
Pro: The Look of the Kit is Gorgeous
The design of the KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit is fantastic, especially if you like a futuristic style look. The screen is a decent size (though it could be bigger), there is an LED light display toward the bottom face, and it comes in some nice color options. As far as design, they pretty much knocked this thing out of the park.
Con: The Firing Lag
The KangerTech Xlum box mod vapes well. It’s not the best performing mod I’ve seen, but it does a good job. However, the chipset, though fast in the menu, does not perform as well as it should when firing up the mod. There is a noticeable lag when you fire the Xlum. It may not be a problem for some, but for others, it can get a bit frustrating.
Pro: The Battery Door is Secure and Doesn’t Rattle
The battery door on the Xlum mod is located on the entire backside panel. It’s easy to remove. To secure it back on, you simply align the bottom tab correctly and it seals securely with the magnetic backplate.
Con: The Only Vaping Modes are Power Mode, TC, and TCR Modes
Most vapers would like to at least know that a mod is capable of other vaping modes. The KangerTech Xlum 200W box mod, however, only gives the option of the various TC, TCR, and standard power mode. With other kits offering options such as Custom Curve Wattage to enhance the vaping experience, it’s sort of a let down that KangerTech didn’t include other vaping modes to keep up with other manufacturers. If you’re strictly a power or TC vaper, then this likely won’t be an issue.
Pro: The KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit Delivers Lush Clouds and Quality Flavor
The flavor from the Xlum tank is quite nice, especially with the NR Mesh coils. And the clouds are super thick, so most average cloud chasers won’t complain about lack of vapor. You do get three different coil options, plus the tank is compatible with SMOK Baby Beast coils.
Overall Take on the KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit
There are a lot of good things about the Xlum 200W Starter Kit, but there are a few issues that might dissuade vapers from purchasing it. The lack of other vaping modes may not be a problem for some, but the noisy Xlum tank might make you think twice. The Xlum kit is certainly a large improvement from KangerTech’s recent devices, and despite a few nit-picky problems, it is still a solid starter. The KangerTech Xlum 200W Starter Kit might be a good option for those looking to upgrade from a portable to a box mod.
