Whether you’re a new or experienced vaper, or if you’re using a vape pen on a regular basis or occasionally, you’re going to need to take care of your pen. It can be hard to know how to clean a vape pen properly if you’ve never done it before.

If you want the best flavor then cleaning it often will give you the optimal tasting vape.

There are different steps to take, depending on if you vaporize using oil, herbs, or wax, to remove built up residue to ensure that the vapor inhaled is clean.

Also, if you familiarize yourself with the different parts of your vape pen, then you’ll know how to disassemble and reassemble it, making cleaning a vape pen easy and keeping it performing safely.

Below are the steps to take to clean a vape pen, so it will last longer and provide a tastier vape.

How to Clean a Dry Herb Vape Pen

Here are the steps to take to clean dry herb vape pen.

  • Detach the heating chamber
  • Empty out all the fillings, including the ashes of the vaped herbs. Do this by lightly tapping them into a trash bin
  • Using a small brush that the vape pen comes with or q-tip, clean out any particles in the chamber and on the screen. This step will help extend the life of the atomizer. Don’t use water which may harm the compact wiring inside
  • Clean the outside of the vape pen with a cotton cloth
  • Rinse the mouthpiece under running water
  • Reassemble by screwing the chamber connector to the heating chamber
  • Press the micro button five or six times to turn the device on

These steps should be done after each use. Don’t use water on the pen, especially the heating chamber, except on the mouthpiece.

How to Clean an Oil or Wax Vape Pen

Because of the sticky residue in the heating chamber, oil or wax vape pens can be harder to clean. However, if you clean it regularly, it gets easier.

Most oil and wax vaporizer pens consist of similar parts. It’s important not to get an oil vape pen wet. And don’t use alcohol to clean the chamber that holds the wick.

  • Open the heating chamber and detach the mouthpiece
  • Prepare a q-tip or a dab tool that comes with your vape pen with rubbing alcohol for scrubbing the rim and inside layer of the mouthpiece. It can also be used to clean the heating chamber
  • Repeat the previous steps until there is no residue remaining in the heating chamber
  • Try not to apply too much pressure to the heating coil. It’s delicate and can easily break, making your vape pen useless
  • Dry all the parts completely before using
  • Screw the chamber connector to the heating chamber
  • Press the micro button five or six times to turn the device on

These steps should be done after each use.

How to Cleaning a Concentrate Vaporizer

When smoking legal weed or essential oils a vaporizer can get the most out of your concentrate.

Wax is put directly onto a coil which is wrapped around a wick. You need to be cautious while cleaning the inside of the piece.

You can use rubbing alcohol to clean off the residue. The easiest way to do this is by using a q-tip or cloth with alcohol and wiping the interior of the chamber, watching out for the coil.

Clean the mouthpiece with a cotton ball or cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol. However, some concentrate vapes don’t work well with alcohol, so check the manual first to make sure it’s okay.

How to Clean a Vape Pen–For All Types

Warm the vape pen up first to make the cleaning process easier. This step will help loosen the residue inside the heating chamber.

Try not to spill rubbing alcohol or water on the vape pen while cleaning. Instead, use a dab tool to prevent accidental contamination of the core circuitry.

If your vape pen has oil attachments, detach those from the heating chamber first.

Clean the outside first using a damp, soft cloth

Regular cleaning of your vape pen will help it last longer and keep your vape fluids tasting much better. It’s well worth the extra effort.

Once a week, inspect the head of the battery for small particles or to check if thin films of leaked concentrates have accumulated on the head.

You can soak your mouthpiece in rubbing alcohol for about 20 minutes. Follow this by rinsing it with hot water.

Additional Care

Here’s a great tutorial on cleaning your tank, but even with proper cleaning the tank and mouthpiece need to be replaced. Tanks last about 2 weeks of regular use. A good way to know your tank needs to be replaced is if the vapor tastes burnt.

If you store your vape pen properly, it will last longer. Always store the liquid in a sealed container at room temperature.

If the battery stops holding its charge, it should be replaced.

If there’s gurgling or spit-back, you probably have e-liquid in the tank center tube. Use a paper towel to clean it.

If the vapor tastes bad, it’s probably time to clean your vape pen or replace the tank or liquid. Try not to let the tank run dry. But if you take a dry hit, refill the tank.

Try not to overfill the tank or it may leak. If the leaking continues, then there might be vapor in the center tube or the tank may need to be replaced.

The coil also needs to be replaced every two weeks. For tips on how to change the coil, click here.
