JUUL Labs may be reducing its U.S. vaping flavors inventory but the fast-growing company possesses no immediate plans to simulate such action in the Great White North.
Reacting to the demands of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), JUUL announced in November it would halt sales of a series of youth-centric flavors in U.S. stores, although in Canada its sales strategy remains virtually intact, according to CBC News.
The largest vaping company in the U.S. “stopped accepting retail orders for our Mango, Fruit, Creme and Cucumber JUUL pods to the over 90,000 retail stores that sell our product,” JUUL CEO Kevin Burns said via company press release.
The FDA in September warned numerous domestic vaping companies to, in essence, retool their marketing campaigns to detour use by minors or their offerings will be federally banned from retail stores.
A number of organizations, like JUUL, are beginning to self-impose product cutbacks.
In Canada, however, it’s status quo. Canucks can still get their mango and other fruity offerings. There will be no JUUL flavor restrictions north of the border.
“All flavors are compliant with Canadian regulations,” Victoria Davis, a representative from JUUL, was quoated as saying.
Anna Maddison, a Health Canada associate, told CBC News the country had regulations in place to deflect “the promotion of vaping products with candy and dessert (flavors)” and remained unalarmed about JUUL’s restrictions in America and freedom in Canada.
“Canada has established a strong regulatory framework for vaping products, with a focus on preventing uptake by youth and non-smokers,” Maddison said.
Via Twitter, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb expressed his gratitude for JUUL’s product sacrifice, before offering an ominous warning to its competitors.
“We want to recognize actions by JUUL today and urge all manufacturers to immediately implement steps to start reversing these trends,” Gottlieb wrote. “We’re deeply concerned about the epidemic of youth use of e-cigs. Voluntary action is no substitute for regulatory steps #FDA will soon take.”
