Nicotine salts have made a big impact on the vape community over the past year. But what are they, and when should you use them? Today, we’ll answer your questions in our Nic Salts Guide!
Looking to get the inside scoop on nic salts? Here are 5 things you should know.
1. What Are Nic Salts?
Nicotine salts refers to the natural compounds found within the tobacco plant. Compared to the higher PH level freebase nicotine, which foregoes a purification process to remove impurities, salts are a non-purified form of the chemical derived from the same plant — and usually contain some level of organic material from the tobacco leaves.
There’s no winner here. The purified form of nicotine (freebase) commonly used in e-liquids today has a variety of different uses, but can become quite harsh in high levels. The non-purified/natural form of nicotine (salts) has a variety of different uses as well, but really shines when it is used in high nicotine concentration formulas.
3. Positives And Negatives
Although salts and freebase nicotine are derived from the same plant, there are positives and negatives to using each:
- Can be mixed with any viscosity e-juice
- Can become rather harsh in high concentrations (over 12mg)
- Slower absorbing
- Normally associated with a decent throat hit
- Perfect for medium to high wattage situations
- Must be used carefully to create the right viscosity e-juice
- Specifically made for salt devices
- Less harsh then freebase in higher concentrations (12mg+)
- Faster absorbing
- Smoother throat hit
- Better suited for low wattage situations
4. Which Form Is Right For Me?
This is perhaps the most important question in the entire list, especially if you’re a transitioning smoker.
Because nicotine salts can be used in higher concentrations while maintaining a tolerable (smoother) throat hit, this makes them an ideal choice for new vapers. The faster absorption rate of the organic nicotine formulas can make the switch from cigarettes easier, because they allow users to achieve the same, super quick nicotine buzz that they’re used to.
A typical 5% JUUL Pod (using salts…) contains about 40mg of nicotine (per pod), or 59mg per/ml, and lasts for 200 puffs. The average cigarette contains 8-12mg of nicotine. So a pack of four JUUL pods is the equivalent of about one pack of cigarettes (20 per pack).
E-liquids containing freebase nicotine are great in lower concentration situations, and are perfect if you’ve successfully made the transition from cigarettes to e-cigs. This form of nicotine is slower absorbing, but provides a decent throat hit that can be really helpful in quitting.
The average 6mg bottle of e-juice (using freebase…), contains about 1/2 pack (cigarettes) worth of nicotine.
5. Do I Need A Special Device For Nic Salts?
In short, yes. Most devices available on the market today (mods), fire at within a higher wattage range, and are better when used with a freebase nicotine e-juice. The organic nature, high concentration salts call for lower wattage situations. There are many devices on the market specifically made for nicotine salts including, disposables, pod systems, all-in-ones, and cig-a-likes.
Salt devices are relatively cheap, and quite easy to find. You may even have success finding a good all-in-one at your local gas station. Brick and Mortar vape shops tend to always have them on hand as well, in an effort to help transitioning smokers quit successfully.
Nicotine salts can be a great option for anyone looking to quit, or dual users who’ve been unable to put down cigarettes completely, and have been using both traditional cigarettes and e-cigs at the same time. Picking the right nicotine level e-juice can be vital when you first start out. My advice? Talk to your local shop, they’re normally more than willing to guide you in the right direction.
